Why the perfect dog doesn't exist
Hear me out...
Last night, I was watching Mean Girls and I was thinking about how I wish I had stuck with befriending the quirky girls in high school, and not the mean girls...
Lenny is my atonement; she’s my quirky friend who I’m not embarrassed to walk beside. Her whole energy gives ‘quirky’. She’s the goofy girl I should have been friends with in high school and her whole vibe is very welcome as I enter my forties. Lenny has been, at times, a hot mess. She lives her truth. At five years old, she’s mostly learning backwards, constantly tumbling into new challenges, but ultimately building confidence and self regulating in a way that makes me feel so proud of her. She’s clumsy, gorgeous, has no chill, is so patient, clever and cunning all in one quirky package that is somehow kind of near-perfect to me.
The most successful dog owners are those who appreciate their dog’s for who they are, accept them for what they have been through and try to play to their strengths. A non-linear messy path to quirky near-perfection is far more interesting than perfect.
Try not to project your ideas of your dog onto your dog, instead notice their ‘flaws’ and accept them as part of their unique personality - focus on all the things they do really really well!
I bet you didn’t think Mean Girls would be a teachable moment for you and your dog today...
Love Jess x
